What MP3 Bitrate Should You Choose? (128 vs 192 vs 320)

When you save an MP3 you're asked to pick a bitrate — 128, 192, 256, or 320 kbps. It controls the balance between sound quality and file size. Here's what each setting really means and which one to choose for music, podcasts, and archiving.

What "bitrate" means

Bitrate is how much data the file uses per second of audio, measured in kilobits per second (kbps). More data means the encoder can preserve more detail, which generally means better sound — and a bigger file. Lower bitrate means a smaller file with more of the original detail thrown away.

You cannot improve an existing MP3 by re-saving it at a higher bitrate. If a file is already 128 kbps, converting it to 320 kbps just makes a larger file that still contains only 128 kbps worth of quality — the detail was discarded when it was first encoded and can't be invented back. Always encode from the highest-quality source you have (ideally a WAV or a lossless master), not from an already-compressed MP3.

CBR vs VBR (briefly)

Constant bitrate (CBR) uses the same data rate throughout. Variable bitrate (VBR) spends more data on complex passages and less on simple ones, often giving similar quality at a smaller average size. For maximum compatibility and predictability, CBR is a safe choice; VBR is a fine option if your target players support it.

Much less than for music. Speech occupies a narrow frequency range and compresses very efficiently, so podcasts, audiobooks, lectures and voice notes sound clean at 128 kbps — and often even lower. Reserving 320 kbps for a talking-only recording mostly just wastes space. Save the high bitrates for music, where the extra detail actually earns its place.
