How to use the metronome

01

Set your tempo

Drag the slider, type a number, or tap the "Tap tempo" button in time with your music to set the BPM by feel.

02

Shape the feel

Pick a time signature and subdivision, then choose which beat gets the accent so the downbeat stands out.

03

Practise smarter

Press start, then open the speed trainer to gradually ramp the tempo up as you play — the proven way to master fast passages.

How accurate is this metronome?

Very. It uses the Web Audio API's high-resolution clock with a look-ahead scheduler, so each click is placed on a precise sample-accurate timeline rather than relying on ordinary browser timers. The timing stays rock-solid even if the rest of the page is busy.

What are subdivisions for?

Subdivisions add extra clicks between the main beats — eighth notes, triplets or sixteenths. They help you keep steady time on faster passages and internalise the rhythmic grid, not just the pulse.

Can I change which beat is accented?

Yes. Use the "Accent on beat" menu to choose which beat in the bar is emphasised — usually beat 1 (the downbeat), but you can move it or turn the accent off entirely. The accented beat is shown in amber and plays a higher click.

What is the speed trainer?

It automatically raises the tempo by a set amount every few measures, up to a target BPM. Start slow enough to play a passage cleanly and let it carry you up to full speed — the single most effective practice technique for building speed.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, it works in modern mobile browsers. Tap "Start" once to enable sound (browsers require a tap before playing audio), and keep the tab active for the steadiest timing.
