How to Fix Common Audio Problems

Most audio problems sound alarming but have straightforward causes and fixes. This guide covers the most common ones — too quiet, distorted or clipping, cut off at the start or end, echoey, and out of sync — explains exactly what is causing each, and tells you honestly when a browser tool can fix it and when you need to re-record.

Audio is too quiet

What it sounds like: the recording is hard to hear at full volume, or noticeably quieter than other audio.

What causes it: the microphone was too far from the source, the input gain was set too low, or the file was exported at a conservative level to avoid clipping.

Can it be fixed after recording? Yes, often well. Boosting a quiet recording with a limiter (which raises the level while preventing distortion) usually works cleanly as long as the recording itself does not have heavy background noise. Audio and video are out of sync

What it sounds like: the voice does not match the mouth movements in a video, or sound effects are a fraction late or early.

What causes it: a sample rate mismatch between the audio and video (e.g. audio at 44.1 kHz edited in a 48 kHz timeline), a recording buffer issue, or a Bluetooth audio device introducing latency during capture.

Can it be fixed after recording? Yes, in video editing software by shifting the audio track forward or backward on the timeline.
